The second largest city in Contra Costa County, Richmond is home to approximately 108,000 residents. Prior to the founding of Richmond in 1905, San Francisco politician Edmund Randolph, a native of Richmond, Virginia, convinced an 1854 surveying party to use the names Pt. Richmond and Richmond in the East Bay. This area became the end of the line for the Santa Fe Railroad, using the names suggested by Randolph. Point Richmond was the original downtown area, connected via ferry to San Francisco.

World War II brought migrants and an industrial boom that triggered dramatic growth in Richmond. The four Richmond Shipyards were built on the waterfront, employing thousands of women and African Americans. These shipyards built more ships for the war effort than any other site in the country. The medical care program set up for the shipyard workers grew into Kaiser Permanente. During this time, a new downtown grew up in the center of town with department stores and a booming population.

In the post-war era, Richmond’s population declined sharply, and the city experienced a variety of problems due to this loss of industry, jobs, and revenue. Starting in the early 2000s, aggressive redevelopment was pursued in an effort to refurbish the downtown, create more housing, transit access, and multi-use trails and green space.

Richmond is home to Point Pinole Regional Shoreline, ten sites listed under the National Register of Historic Places, and the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park.
